Nature & Science
It’s natural beauty that keeps families coming back to the 1000 Islands year after year. Waterfront walking trails, nature preserves and petting farms are abundant throughout the region. Zoos and aquariums focus on local forest and marine life, but rainbow-colored sea creatures are here too! Just stop at the Aqua Zoo in Alexandria Bay.
The region has long been supported by a hard-working agriculture community. Check out a modern dairy operation a Old McDonald’s Farm in Sackets Harbor, where the kids can ride a trolley and pet calves.
Come in the spring and smell the sweet aroma of maple sugar shacks on both sides of the border. The summer offers visitors a chance to hit the fields and pick their own strawberries and apples.
Apple orchards are scattered throughout the region, making autumn a peak visitor period for collecting cider and fresh-made donuts — don’t forget the wagon hay rides!
Back for 2010! The 1000 Islands Ag Tour!
The Ag Tour lets visitors stop at more than a dozen farms, wineries and crops stands to learn about the agriculture industry. The experience is just a phone call away. Visitors can dial a number on their cell phone to hear a two-minute explanation of each location before deciding to head-in and learn more. Go to www.agvisit.com to learn more.
