Winter recreation in the 1000 Islands

With such scenic landscape, the Thousand Islands attracts winter visitors looking to enjoy nature at a quieter pace.

Locations such as the Nature Center at Wellesley Island State Park (free admission in the winter) have miles and miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails that take trekkers through forests, along shorelines with island views and among deer, turkeys and other winter animals. Search for 1000 Islands conservation areas for skiing, snowshoeing and other outdoor activities.

If you’re looking for a little bit more excitement, head to Watertown (NY) and hit the slopes at the Dry Hill Ski Area, offering rentals, lessons, hills for varying skill levels, a snowtube park, a cozy lodge and more.
