Soon
after it was settled in 1822, Clayton became a major shipbuilding
and lumbering port. Dozens of charming buildings from this
magnificent era remain. The Clayton Chamber of Commerce is
an information hub, including a guide to the Historic Walking
Tour.
Clayton
is home to some of the most unique museums in the 1000 Islands
including the renowned Antique Boat Museum. The Thousand Islands
Decoy, Muskie and History Museum, listed on the National Registry
of Historic Places, houses special exhibits of world-class
muskies and hunting decoys from the past and present. A new
archival library is open in the museum for research of river
heritage. The Handweaving Museum and Arts Center showcases
a beautiful collection of handweaving, and offers art exhibitions
and workshops for all ages.
Anglers
can launch their pursuit of a trophy muskellunge or walleye
from one of Clayton’s many river access points. Setting
out with a local fishing guide is a great way to guarantee
a successful outing.
For some local flavor, stop at one of Clayton’s fine restaurants for some St. Lawrence River cuisine. Take in Irish, jazz and bluegrass concerts on the waterfront, or take part in some of the activities at Recreation Park.
The Antique Boat Museum
At the Antique Boat Museum you’ll find the largest and most impressive collection of fresh-water recreational boats in North America. The Museum is especially noted for its St. Lawrence River Skiff and classic powerboat collection. Every August, the museum hosts the nation’s oldest antique boat show.
